Giving In To The Magic
Yes, I’ve finally given in! After months of saying I wouldn’t read The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, I finally felt like I was completely out of the loop and had to do it. So last night, I stopped by the library and picked up a copy.
Day One: Section 1.
I have the Large Print copy of the book, so there are a few more pages than the standard version. Section one is 47 pages. 47 pages of why we all suck at tidying up and that this book will make us all masters of our domains. Thus far though, nothing heavy. No solutions. Lots of background that’s easy to identify with though: the author talks about how she used to reorganize the same things all over again and how she would organize when under stress or a deadline. She talks about the reasons why people are messy (hint: it’s human nature, there’s nothing wrong with you!). It reminds me a bit of the book Secrets From The Eating Lab, which says essentially the same thing about dieting and human motivations.
Reading section 1 has made me feel anxious. I have so much stuff and yes, I do want to get rid of it….I think….maybe. But that sounds scary. How will this be better? I want to read section 2.
I’ve listed an old weather radio on Craigslist and shredded a few papers I didn’t need anymore. That should help temper the anxiety until I can get to part 2 tomorrow.
For those of you who have read this book, did it change your life? Has anybody read it and just felt “meh”? NO SPOILERS!
And for those of you who haven’t read it, are you scared to read it like I am?
